Built to Build

Brandon has taken on the role of business development and consulting across his portfolio of ventures, including Hulk Systems. Creating foundational building blocks; developing business and marketing plans, investment opportunities, economic strategies, identifying needs, strengths and challenges in new markets is what he loves doing. Being a creative person by nature, Brandon is driven by the challenge of building something from nothing, bringing ideas to life and the learning process it takes to do so. In earlier years, those ideas were designing outdoor living spaces, custom furniture pieces, fine artworks, and off-road trailers. Now, the ideas that spark Brandon’s drive are those which could either improve the quality of life for a group of people, or the quality of world in which we all live on.

The ability to listen and then constructively interpret what I’m hearing. I guess it’s called taking criticism. I’ve never had to agree with someone to allow them the right to be heard, and I will always give what they are saying thoughtful reflection. I think everyone deserves respect in that way. To further that point, I’ve always had the willingness to change or dust off and try again in order to improve, sometimes letting go of emotional attachment to projects in order for one of my companies to move forward in its larger ambitions.

The coatings marketplace is massive. If I was to advise my younger self, I would say not to take on everything at once. You don’t need to. Identify a niche or new market or 2. You’ll have more than enough to swallow in terms of things to learn, research and development and projects than you can handle. Copy and paste that model once you’ve succeeded in grabbing some decent market share. To the entrepreneur, I would say that without devoting time to growth and networking in the evenings and refining what you’ve built on the weekends, you aren’t one. You’re an employee in your own company. Entrepreneurship is inherently tied to sacrifice.

Excitement of the challenge to build something new and better, and the positive impact it could have if we succeed, whether on a very small or grand scale, doesn’t matter. Making the commitment to a mission statement, attracting others to that vision, and hopefully seeing it bloom into fruition. That’s what keeps me literally and figuratively getting up, dusting off, and eagerly trying again each day.
